DESCRIPTION
Initiative 1- Let Us Watch and Act Activity
As a part of this activity, students of grades III – IX and XI watched videos, followed by the insightful discussions to create awareness about the clean and affordable energy. Learners delved in the pleasure and learning through the UNDP Video – Don’t Choose Extinction. Learners imbibed that everyone must strive to ensure access to clean and affordable energy, which is key to the development.
Initiative 2- Carbon Footprint
In order to empower the learners and to foster youth capable of critical thinking and problem-solving, Carbon Footprint Activity was conducted for the students of grade V.
Through this activity, learners calculated the estimated Carbon Footprint they create in a day. They were sensitised that climate change caused by excess greenhouse gases and a big carbon footprint can cause:
- Heat waves that damage crops, stress livestock, and make life difficult for people.
- More air pollution, which is linked to allergies, asthma, and other health problems.
- Severe storms and flooding due to higher sea levels.
- Loss of habitat as the climate changes, particularly in Arctic regions.
Students were sensitised and they made efforts to Go Green.
Initiative 3- Reach Out - Slogan Writing Activity
Students of grade VI actively participated in the Reach Out – Slogan Writing Activity. Through the activity, the learners made slogans evincing the fact that current reliance on fossil fuels is unsustainable and harmful to the planet, so there is a dire need to change the way we produce and consume energy. Implementing these new energy solutions as fast as possible is essential to counter climate change.
Initiative 4 – Energy Literacy
Energy is the driver of our social and economic growth, on the one hand, while on the other hand, excessive use of fossil energy has caused climate change. Becoming energy literate is the first step towards climate correction. Energy literacy training helps people in understanding energy, its generation, consumption and wastage. It helps in understanding carbon footprint and its impact on the environment. Through this certified training course, one will understand means to avoid and minimize energy usage, how to become carbon neutral, clear misconceptions around solar energy and ways to adopt solar energy solutions.
Students of grades VII, VIII and IX, did an Online Course – “Become Energy Literate”.
It was a great learning experience and the learners imbibed that:
An energy-literate person:
- Can trace energy flows and think in terms of energy systems.
- Knows how much energy they use, for what purpose, and where the energy comes from.
- Can assess the credibility of information about energy.
- Can communicate about energy and energy use in meaningful ways.
- Is able to make informed energy use decisions based on an understanding of impacts and consequences.
Initiative 5 – Newspaper Communique
Learners of grade VIII were engaged in the Newspaper Activity - Newspaper Communique. Articles- “How bringing back lost species revives ecosystems” and “What do forests do?” published in Times of India (Student Edition) dated 5th December and 6th December2022 was read by the learners as a part of SDG 7 Activity. Learners read the facts stated in the write up and discussed the finer nuances of the objectives of SDG Goal 7. The objective of sensitizing the students about ‘the need to ensure access to clean and affordable energy for all’ was realised.
Initiative 6 – Bookmark Making Activity
It was an exciting activity for the students of grade VIII. Innovative, creative and colourful bookmarks on the theme - Clean and affordable energy for all’ were prepared by the students. The activity aimed to enhance their creativity and get cognizant with the SDG Goal 7. Learners showed lot of enthusiasm while making the bookmarks.
They enjoyed making bookmarks as it was an opportunity for them to display their talent and creativity.
It was indeed not only learning but also a fun-filled activity.
Initiative 7 – Energy Conservation Podcast
Students of IX and XI made their voices heard through the innovative and succinct podcasts on – ‘My Idea of Saving energy’. It encouraged the listeners to save energy and be the energy conscious generation.
Initiative 8- Assembly on World Conservation Day
“A transition to clean energy is about making an investment in our future.” - Gloria Reuben
An assembly was conducted by the students of Class VI-D, to sensitise everyone about ‘World Energy Conservation Day’, which is celebrated on December 14 every year.
The assembly began with a mime act that highlighted different ways in which we unconsciously waste energy. Students shared the importance of various renewable sources through models followed by two case studies about a company called ‘Mitticool’ and a couple living in Kerala. It was followed by a splendid dance performance that highlighted the importance of
nature and the conservation of energy.
The assembly was addressed by Vice-Principal madam, Ms. Priya Handa. She applauded the students for their performance and efforts. She shared simple ways to conserve energy and encouraged students to be responsible citizens of India. She made students realize that we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors rather it is borrowed from our future generation.
Initiative-9 Orientation Programme (Climate change and its impact)
Boscons participated in this Orientation Programme with zeal and enthusiasm. A Group of five students, Ananya Bhutani, Vanshika Chandna, Gaurav Ghemere, Garvit Sharma, Dev Arora from Class 9 and 10 along with their mentor Ms. Sujatha Jagdish keenly educated themselves on the objectives and structure of Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan. The participants also had the opportunity to meet ‘Solar Man of India’, Professor Chetan S. Solanki. Professor Chetan S. Solanki sensitized the students about the causes of emerging Climate Change and its Impact on the planet and also gave a solution on how humans can come out of this grave situation. Professor Solanki emphasised the students about usage of Solar Energy in our daily life and talked about how it is about time to stop the usage of carbon dioxide emitting practises which are the main cause of climate change. Professor also encouraged everyone to start their own Energy Saving Clubs that would focus on creating awareness and exploring new ways of energy conservation.
Initiative-10 Green Energy, Clean Energy– Bosco’s Green Brigade
GREEN BRIGADE: THE BEGINNING
The secrets are in the plants, to elicit them you have to love them enough- George Washington Carver.
Bosco’s Green Brigade pioneered an herbal garden set up in the school premises in the presence of our Passionate Vice-Principal Ms. Priya Handa and Teacher-Mentors, Ms. Sujatha Jagdish and Ms. Neha Sadana under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Parmod Sagar on 9th May 2022.
Dr. Sagar laid emphasis on plant propagation over seed germination. He reiterated several advantages of propagating plants using cuttings. He mentioned how propagating a new plant via cuttings, avoids the difficulties faced when using seeds. For example, by using cuttings you could propagate a young tree that has not yet flowered (and thus has not yet produced seed), a male tree, or a sterile plant. He also threw light on different types of Agriculture without using soil. He briefed the students regarding Hydroponics and Aeroponics wherein nutrients are supplied in the form of liquid and spray, respectively.
The clump of new herbal saplings was placed on both sides of the main entrance of the school building. Ashwagandha (Indian Ginseng), Lemongrass, Rosemary, Vinca rosea (Sada bahar), Bryophyllum (Pathar Chatta), Sweet Basil (Stevia), Giloy (Heart-leaved Moonseed), Aparajita (Butterfly pea flower), Snake plant, and Aloe Vera (Dhratkumari) were among the saplings that were planted. Dr. Sagar demonstrated propagation by Stem cutting for Rosemary and asked the students of the Green Brigade to try this and many other propagatory procedures at home and share pictures of their learnings and progress. He especially stressed upon the importance of traditional Indian herbs that are native to our country and have, as of late, become scarce due to westernization.
